The Sustainable Living Initiative Centre (SLIC), a registered NGO, was officially launched on February 27th 2005

As well as being a hotel, we facilitate a program of Sustainable Living training workshops at our education centre. We offer trainees a Sustainable Living experience, as opposed to a display or demonstration, and workshops include various solar energy units, wind technology, organic farming, veggie oil as fuel, hydro-electricity, how to make biogas, and general sustainable living. Trainees are involved in both theoretical instruction and practical construction of alternative energy units, both at the centre and in their home villages.

The Sustainable Living Initiative has been established to promote awareness of environmental issues, and specifically to promote the use of simple technology to minimize negative impact on the environment and conserve natural resources in Dominica. To this end, we are running a training programme and building a Sustainable Living Study Centre in the heart of the rainforest at 3 Rivers, where both students and villagers can experience sustainable living first hand and acquire skills to adopt environmentally responsible lifestyles.

The project is being undertaken in collaboration with 3 Rivers Eco Lodge and Lifeline Ministries, a registered NGO, together with various community people, and combines demonstration with hands on learning and access to affordable technology that will be used in homes and farms across the country. We are in the process of registering the initiative as an NGO.

We facilitate a programme of Alternative Energy and Organic Farming training workshops. Trainees are involved in both theoretical instruction and practical construction of alternative energy units, initially at the centre and subsequently in their homes, farms and communities. The idea is that the trainees are able to see one unit installed and working and they can learn "hands on" with a second unit, which is disassembled and reassembled many times. Participants are able to purchase their own unit at cost or by instalments through a revolving loan fund (using funding provided by other partner agencies including the UNDP, the British High Commission and the University of Vermont in the US), to be installed by the instructor and trainees during another workshop for people in that village.

We have begun running monthly workshops to teach people how to make and use the equipment and our membership is growing fast.
